Grinding Stumps Below Grade So You Can Use the Space

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. In Houston’s climate it becomes a nursery for termites, carpenter ants, and fungal rot, all of it sitting a short distance from your foundation. Stumps also sprout — species like tallow and hackberry will throw suckers for years — and they make mowing a chore.

We grind stumps 6 to 12 inches below grade, deep enough that you can re-sod, replant, or lay hardscape over the spot. Our machines range from compact walk-behind grinders that fit through a standard gate to larger units for big trunks and open lots, so backyard access is rarely a problem.

What to Expect From the Job

  • Utility Location First: We locate and mark underground utilities before any grinding begins. A grinder wheel finding a gas or fibre line is an expensive and dangerous way to start a job.
  • Ground Well Below Grade: The stump and visible surface roots are ground 6 to 12 inches below soil level, deeper if you are planting or pouring concrete over the area.
  • Your Choice on the Chips: Grinding produces a surprising volume of chips. We can haul them off, rake them back into the void as fill, or leave them stacked for you to use as mulch.
  • Topsoil Backfill Available: We can backfill with topsoil so the area is level and ready for sod or seed rather than leaving you a depression that settles further.
  • Tight Access Handled: Our compact grinder fits through gates as narrow as 36 inches, so a backyard stump does not mean taking down a section of fence.

Why Choose Us for Stump Grinding?

  • Right Machine for the Stump: We run both compact and large grinders, so we are not forced to either damage your gate or give up on a big trunk.
  • Cheaper Alongside a Removal: If we are already on site taking down the tree, adding the stump costs significantly less than booking it as a separate trip.
  • Clear, Diameter-Based Pricing: Grinding is priced on stump diameter at ground level plus access difficulty, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
  • Ready to Replant: Tell us what is going in the space and we will grind to the depth that actually supports it, rather than a standard pass that leaves you digging through chips.

FAQ

Stump Grinding & Removal Questions

  • What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chews the stump down into mulch below ground level and leaves the root system to decay naturally in place. Full removal excavates the stump and major roots entirely, which requires heavy equipment and tears up a much larger area of yard. Grinding is faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive, and it is the right choice for the large majority of residential jobs.

  • How deep do you grind?

Typically 6 to 12 inches below grade. If you are planting a new tree in the same spot or pouring concrete over it, tell us — we will go deeper, since new root systems and footings need more clearance than sod does.

  • Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?

Grass, yes — once we backfill with topsoil, sod takes readily. A new tree in the exact same hole is harder, because decaying wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down and the old root mass is still in the ground. Either plant a few feet off the old spot, or have us excavate deeper and replace the soil.

  • Do you clean up the wood chips?

Your choice. Grinding a stump produces a surprising volume of chips, often more than people expect. We can haul them off, rake them back into the void as fill, or leave them for you to use as mulch. Just let us know which before we start.

  • How long does stump grinding take?

Most residential stumps take 30 minutes to two hours depending on diameter, species hardness, and how much surface root we are chasing. Large oak and pecan stumps take longer than the same size in a softer species.
